Which LLM Should I Use? A Practical Guide For Business Owners
Branched Team - 2026-05-06
Pick any five business owners and you will get five different answers about which AI tool is best. The truth is that the answer depends on the job - and most teams should be using more than one.
The short version
- ChatGPT (OpenAI) - the all-rounder. Strong writing, good reasoning, broad ecosystem of integrations and custom GPTs.
- Claude (Anthropic) - the writer's pick. Longer context, more natural tone, careful with nuance.
- Gemini (Google) - deep integration with Google Workspace and excellent at multimodal (text plus images, video, large documents).
- Copilot (Microsoft) - the right answer if your team lives in Microsoft 365.
- Perplexity - not strictly an LLM, but the go-to for AI-powered research with cited sources.
How to choose
Three questions cut through most of the noise:
- Where does my team already work? If it is Google Workspace, Gemini removes friction. If it is Microsoft 365, Copilot does.
- What do I need it to do most often? Long-form writing and analysis lean Claude. Coding, agents, and ecosystem tooling lean ChatGPT. Research with sources leans Perplexity.
- What data am I willing to share? If you are working with sensitive data, choose a paid plan with the right data and privacy settings - never the free consumer tier.
Common combinations that work
- Claude for drafting, ChatGPT for execution and automation.
- Gemini inside Workspace for everyday work, Perplexity for research.
- Copilot inside the Microsoft stack, plus a custom agent for the workflows Copilot does not cover.
What not to do
- Do not standardise on one tool just because a vendor told you to.
- Do not put confidential client data into a free consumer tier.
- Do not ignore the underlying workflow - the best LLM cannot fix a broken process.
If you want help choosing the stack that fits your business, our Compass diagnostic will recommend tools based on how you actually work.
